Making the Case for the Middle – Why New Density-Enabling Development Models are Needed for Resilient Communities

Our goal is to unpack our understanding of Middle Housing to better understand current problems and solutions by having in-depth conversations with stakeholders and analyzing the enabling policy, market and technical conditions for successful implementation in differing local contexts. Our proposal is part of a multi-faceted approach that involves research and understanding, and knowledge exchange. Mddl and CUI are asking for AREF’s help to educate and innovate with our proposed program (part 1 of a larger program), comprising of a preliminary Alberta-Specific Discovery - Undertake a literature review to understand the existing body of knowledge of middle housing challenges and past solutions to serve as the foundation for our program and to identify key gaps in understanding.

We will conduct interviews with housing experts, policy makers, community members and other stakeholders to provide firsthand perspectives on the challenges faced and strategies employed in addressing middle housing issues in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of broad issues and context-specific complexities. Finally, we will analyze case studies of successfully implemented middle housing solutions to identify best practices.
